Charcoal & Pastel

Pastel is a medium I started exploring not too long ago and it is incredibly pleasant to work with. I like to start with an underpainting, where I dilute pastels with water and then build opaque layers on top. 

I use charcoal and pastel primarily for small value and colour studies that are preparatory for larger paintings.

I was inspired to take up these two mediums after discovering the work of Casey Baugh and Daniel J. Keys. By studying their work I managed to improve my technique immensely and now I find such a pleasure in utilising these mediums.
